HORSES OF THE IMAGINATION
Distortion, Perspective, Movement

RENDEZVOUS WITH THE HORSES OF THE IMAGINATION

DISTORTION  An image-development strategy used to deform an image through exaggeration. To express a particular feeling, the artist can twist, bend, elongate, stretch a form or shape. In the painting, Sveva distorts the buildings. The whole composition seems unnatural and stretched to emphasize the race into the distance.

PERSPECTIVE  A system for creating the illusion of 3-D depth in 2-D images. Three types of perspective are linear perspective (based on parallel lines converging as their distance from the observer increases) Notice how the street converges in the distance. Notice the distorted perspective of the building. A second kind is diminishing perspective (based on the apparent reduction in the size of objects as their distance from the observer increases). Notice the large figures in the foreground in contrast to the small objects and building at the end of the road. A third stategy to create depth is atmospheric perspective (based on the apparent reduction of the detail and colour intensity of objects as their distance from the observer increases). Notice how the horses are dark and bold in colour and how the horizon is more faded. Perspective can enhance the illusion of movement. It manipulates our visual direction. Paintings that allow the viewer to move inside are often very powerful.

MOVEMENT  A principle of art and design concerned with creating a distinctive structure that shows a feeling of action or a series of actions and guides a viewer's eye through a work of art. Horses of the Imagination employs several strategies to create movement. Converging lines, colour, lines, and skillful placement of light and dark, big and little shapes. The horses and riders are cropped to give an illusion of speed. As if they are moving so fast that you can only catch sight of part of them. The dark colours in the foreground and the smaller dark areas in the background force the eye to travel in the direction the horses are going. The composition and use of movement appropriately support the underlying theme about the fast and furious imagination.

ACTIVITY  Draw and paint and then paint three examples of perspective. Incorporporate elements of design that give the illusion of movement. Try to distort the shapes of your painting to express feelings of anguish, surprise, or fear. To understand Sveva's style, compare her imagery with surrealist painters such SALVADOR DALI. Sveva not only uses distortion, exaggeration, symbolism, strange associations, she paints dream images and creates illusions that appear like realistic. She writes:

Recapitulation is a the retelling of an existence, both personal and universal--an exploration of the elements which underlie all human existence. Recapitulation is also a dream world into which I go deeper and deeper, stage by stage, and vision by vision.

Nearing the end of Sveva's journey through hell and Purgatory, she entered heaven. For her, heaven included all the beautiful life forms, especially the animals. Let's go to GANESHA
